Lee Court, Lewisham

Lee Court is a striking Art Deco apartment block in south east London, built in the 1930s.

Our client, Grandpex Company Ltd, wanted to explore adding value by building up, through an additional storey on the roof.

Whilst not statutorily listed, it was identified by the local authority as having local heritage interest. We promoted the scheme through the planning system, assessing it as a non-designated heritage asset because of its architectural detailing.

Our design for this airspace development for six additional flats took care to enhance and reflect the architectural detailing from the original 1930s design, through our choice of material and with the finer details of the design:

  • the windows on the new airspace level mirrored the proportions of the original windows, and took on the distinctive Crittall style which is reminiscent of the Art Deco era;

  • the roof to each stair core adopted a distinctive circular design, reflecting the Art Deco era;

  • the new cladding was finished in heritage blue to complement the colour of the existing brickwork.

The overall design successfully enhances the original architectural features which make Lee Court special, whilst managing to minimise visual impact from surrounding buildings. The finished scheme fits well into its surroundings and it’s an addition that significantly enhances the character of this building.
